New Players
We warmly welcome new players to become a part of Yarra Valley Hockey Club. The community-minded club aims to support the development of players at all levels through the individual attention of our dedicated coaches and the support of our extensive coaching networks.
(Note: As at April 2013 all junior teams are full, so new players should first contact the appropriate age group coordinator before registering or coming to training.)
Yarra, in conjunction with the Banyule Hockey Association, regularly holds HookIn2Hockey programs at the home grounds as well as delivering programs at local primary schools. Supported by Hockey Victoria, these programs are specifically targetted towards young players with no prior hockey experience. They are the ideal entry point for trying out hockey, and also the pathway for players aged up to 10 years old to play weekend competition hockey. See the recent HookIn2Hockey program and summer skills development for young players.
In 2013, a 10-week HookIn2Hockey program will be held starting 27 April until mid August. The program, for players aged 8 years old, and also 9-10 year olds new to hockey, will also include four gala days designed to increase fun and participation.
The club has a strong network of volunteers who support the club in its sporting, social and logistic endeavours. New club members and parents are strongly encouraged to become involved by volunteering in some capacity. There are many job to be done, read about them here.
Yarra fields teams throughout the Winter Season (April-September) in all age levels, and at times also has various teams play in the Summer (October-February) and Indoor Competitions.
Junior training nights are held from Monday to Thursday, usually finishing around 6:45pm. The night for the age group training may vary between years to accommodate coach availablity. Note that after the start of the season teams have a variable need for extra players, so be sure to get in early to be a part of the game.
Uniforms can be purchased via the shopping cart online. Yarra uniform requirements can be viewed at the shop, or in this pdf. Note that the alternate colours are worn when colour clashes with specific teams occur (see bottom of the pdf).
A registration day is held at Yarra each February, and is a good way to find out more information. Registration is also available online. To play competitively, players must also register with Hockey Victoria.
To find out more information or to enquire about attending training, email the appropriate age level coordinator (see Contact).
